Carpet to SeaDek Conversion for Your Inboard

Want to transform your boat into modern times?  One of the most beneficial modifications that you can make is to replace that old carpet with nonskid flooring from SeaDek.  This is truly one of the best upgrades you can do to an inboard boat, however in order for it to be effective and have great appeal, it must be done correctly.

Most inboard watersports boats built before 2005 or so have raw, unfinished fiberglass under the carpet.  In order to properly install SeaDek in boats like this, there is a very specific procedure that must be followed.

Silver Cove Marine uses this procedure to complete our carpet to SeaDek transformations:

  • Remove all interior upholstery panels

  • Remove all removable seat bases, frames, and other carpeted panels

  • Remove all carpet from the floor, seat bases, and panels

  • Remove all glue remnants from the floor, seat bases, and panels

  • Level the floor using appropriate materials

  • Mask off all existing gelcoat

  • Prep floor and gunnels for application of new gelcoat

  • Prep seat bases and panels for application of new gelcoat

  • Spray black gelcoat on floors and gunnels (required for SeaDek to adhere to the surface)

  • Spray black gelcoat on seat bases and panels (required for SeaDek to adhere to the surface)

  • Finish gelcoat to an appropriate texture and appearance

  • Work with SeaDek to scan the vessel for appropriate SeaDek pieces

  • Order SeaDek in the colors and textures requested by the customer

  • Work with SeaDek to install the SeaDek pieces as appropriate

  • Reinstall seat bases, frames, and other panels

  • Reinstall interior upholstery panels

It is important to note that often some panels (battery covers, etc.) need to be recreated because the factory materials may not support installation of SeaDek.  If this is the case, we build these out of King Starboard.  This has worked well for us over the years.

Failure to complete the SeaDek conversion in the manner we promote can result in sloppy installations that look unfinished, unprofessional, and simply incomplete.  We strongly recommend that if you start down the path of converting your carpet to SeaDek, that you go all the way and do it right.  Nothing looks worse than a boat with a sloppy SeaDek installation on the floor, and carpet on the gunnels and seat bases.  A bad SeaDek conversion can easily devalue your vessel, while a proper SeaDek conversion, like what we offer, will certainly increase the value of your vessel.

Silver cove Marine wants your vessel to be the best that it can be, and that is why we only use genuine SeaDek in these transformations.  SeaDek carries a three-year warranty, and usually lasts a lot longer than that when properly cared for.  All of our SeaDek is installed by a certified SeaDek Fabricator who stands behind their installation work.
