This 1997 Ski Nautique is here for some mechanical restoration work on its PCM GT-40 engine. We'll be doing basic maintenance, like changing the oil & filter, replacing the cap, rotor, spark plugs, spark plug wires, impeller, and battery. Once complete and tested, this nice-looking vessel will be available for sale! If you're interested in a great bubble back Ski Nautique, this might be the one for you.

Today we had a successful water test. We properly centered the steering wheel, and the steering resistance feels great.

We also tested the PerfectPass repairs that we made earlier, and I am happy to say that the PerfectPass system is working beautifully.

The boat is currently on the lift at my house waiting for the new owner to come for a water test in a day or two. Due to the cold weather, there is an Xtreme Heater in the bilge keeping everything warm.

The final step in preparing this boat for its new home is to replace the steering cable. If you have ever replaced a steering cable on a 1997 Ski Nautique, you probably know that it takes the older S2205 cable, not the newer ones that the 1998+ boats take. Unfortunately, the S2205 cable is no longer available, so the only option is to replace the helm and then use the newer 90590 cable. This is a bit of a pain, but we'll do it! Here are the new parts (helm and cable).

This is a long post. You'll need to scroll down to the bottom of this post and click SHOW MORE in order to see all of the text.

A new owner is planning to pick up this boat this coming weekend, so during our review of the boat before he comes to pick it up, we wanted to get to the bottom of the PerfectPass issue. You may recall that it would not hold speed. When I powered up the boat today, the PP gauge wouldn't even come on all the way. It would start to boot up, and then stop and reboot over and over. Typically this means that it is not seeing a full 12 volts, but…

Here's the wiring that we found when we looked under the dash. These connectors certainly are not marine-grade. This was the cause of the low voltage going to the PerfectPass system.

Here are the extensions that we wired in, so that the dash can be lifted off without the wires being pulled too tightly. As usual, we used adhesive heat shrink connectors.

This is the switched power connection, which we wired directly to the ignition switch, as recommended by PerfectPass. This is not how it was set up originally on this boat.

Here's the new ground wire, which was connected to the ground port on the voltmeter.

Oh, and we found the cause of the original problem, where the system wouldn't hold speed. The throttle return spring was either invisible or missing. We replaced it, performed a linkage test, and verified that it operated as-designed now.

Our team is working on the cleanup of this boat today. We started by reattaching the loose vinyl on the rear seats. It had been installed by someone in the past who didn't use stainless steel staples, and they had rusted out. We fixed that issue, and are working on the rest of the cleanup now.

Excellent water test tonight. The fuel delivery issue is definitely solved. Now on to cleaning, and this one will be for sale!
